Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Description

This is a simple and affordable way to boost health and create a comforting & cozy beverage at the same time. I started making this at home several years ago when I was seeking ways to create more sustainable and budget-friendly ways to incorporate elderberry more consistently in our home. Many people have asked what makes elderberries so health supportive:
  • It’s rich in flavanoid anthocyanin, which has antioxidant and immune support properties, as well as other nutrients and b-vitamins.
  • Can reduce cold and flu symptoms because of the above.
  • Relieves nasal and sinus congestion because it helps reduce the swelling and inflammation in the sinus cavity due to its inflammatory and anti-viral properties.

It was so easy to make, that I had to share it with my community. It quickly became my most requested and asked about recipe. I gathered inspiration from several other wellness mamas along the way and made the recipe and method my own with tweaks that worked best for me! I hope you love it in your home too!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2c dried elderberries
  • 1/4c dried rosehips
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4c water

Additional Supplies

  • 1 quart-sized saucepan
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • 1 4-cup glass bowl or measuring cup
  • 1 medium-sized fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • 1 quart-sized mason jar or other glass receptacle to keep finished concentrate in the fridge.
  • 1 small funnel to more easily transfer brew from a glass bowl into a bottle for easier dispensing.

Instructions

  • POUR 4 cups of filtered water into a quart quart-sized saucepan. Add dried elderberries, rosehips, cinnamon stick, and stir.
  • SIMMER on medium heat for 30-40 mins, or until water has reduced by 1/3.
  • COOL mixture for 10-15 minutes.
  • PLACE fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth over the top of 4 cup capacity bowl or measuring bowl (I have a Pyrex 4-cup glass measuring cup that works great for this).
  • POUR elderberry tea mixture through a strainer and into a glass bowl.
  • COOL mixture for 15 minutes, or until lukewarm (or below 104 degrees).
  • ADD 1/2 – 1 cup of raw honey to the mixture (more honey will make it more syrupy in consistency).
  • STIR gently until all honey is incorporated and dissolves into warm tea.
  • STORE syrup mixture in a 20+oz glass bottle. I love to repurpose syrup bottles similar to this one.
  • KEEPS in the fridge for up to 6 weeks.
  • DOSAGE:  give every day, as a preventative, throughout cold and flu season – CHILDREN = 1 teaspoon per day. ADULTS = 1 Tablespoon per day. DURING A SICKNESS Administer the same amount above, but give doses every 2-3 hours until symptoms subside.

  • I also love making Elderberry Tea with 1-2 Tablespoons of syrup poured into a mug, topped with hot water and a fresh squeeze of lemon juice.

Notes

WHY I LOVE TO BOOST MY SYRUP WITH ROSEHIPS!

Higher levels of Vitamin C than citrus fruits! Vitamin C is a powerful way to boost our immune systems because of its rich antioxidant components, which help fight inflammation in the body!

Fun fact, during WWII when citrus fruit was hard to come by because of import issues, Rose-hips became quite popular and were made into a nutritious syrup.
