What would you tell your younger self? My younger self was precious, but my older self is so much more. Getting older is a gift. One that shows battle scars, laugh lines, softer skin and wirey grays. Oh to go back and hug my younger self, who spent so much time in her head worried about what others thought of her. I would have told her that unless someone was in the arena with her, she should ask them to kindly gift their opinions elsewhere. I would tell her to laugh loudly, take more days off, and learn to enjoy coffee sooner😉! The noise of the world is deafening. It begins to overwhelm. It begins to drown out sanity, rationale & critical thinking. When I was a little girl, in a big and growing family, life was busy and full and often times very chaotic. To calm the chaos of screaming siblings, piles of laundry, crockpots bubbling with soup, dogs barking and cats whining, my older sister and I would upend everything in our room and then put it back in order. Rearranging, organizing and re-imagining our space. It’s the part of our world we could control. It was a way to create an island of peace in the midst of a busy family life that we had very little say over its function. It was the most insanely therapeutic activity. Our parents would always wonder what we were up to as they could hear things being shuffled and clunked about for hours, younger siblings would whine and pound on our door, but we would keep everyone out until we were done. It was wholesome and satisfying work. So let this be your reminder that when you feel like the noise and opinions of others and all the bad and scary news that is swirling begins to steal your breath and sanity, PAUSE. Refocus. Recenter. Take time to do something that fills your cup. For me, this weekend, I chose to reorganize our very chaotic pantry. Big shoutout to @auburnskyhome for inspo & the new labeler recommendation, some cardstock, a fine tip sharpie, a few more pop top canisters and an audiobook (I was able to finally finish “How to Know A Person” by David Brooks, so good!). For me organizing has always served a dual purpose; keeps me focused (I’m too competitive and hate disorder to quit mid-project) and makes my home more functional and useful for my family! Win win! Also, when you’re an ingredient kitchen, organization is paramount to the success of quickly making wholesome meals!
